Willis F. Harrington was born on July 24, 1882, in Farmington, Delaware. He graduated from the University of Delaware in 1902 and took a degree in chemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1905 he went to work for the Du Pont Company in the Explosives Department and in 1924 he became general manager of the Dyestuffs Department. The Personnel Division was created as an autonomous division in 1918 when the Executive Committee concluded that with the workforce rapidly expanding during the First World War there was a need to centralize personnel practices relating to hiring, firing, and safety.
